The Importance of the 48-Hour Film Project to Filmmakers

 Why Should Filmmakers Participate?

For every filmmaker, that has never competed in the 48-Hour Film Project, you have to try it once.  The feeling of finishing a short film in 48 hours, by far, is the best feeling of accomplishment.  If you are doubting you have the backbone to work in the film industry, this is a great way to find out.

What Exactly is the 48-Hour Film Project?

The 48-HFP is an an international competition that tests filmmakers' abilities to write, produce and edit a 4 to 7-minute film short in 48 hours.  If that is not nerve wrecking enough, the filmmakers have no idea what they will be writing about until Friday night at 7:00 p.m. when team leaders randomly pick a genre.  The teams are also given a character name, a line of dialogue and a prop, all of which MUST be included in the film. Each team has until Sunday at 7:30 p.m. to submit completed projects.  If your team makes the deadline your film will be screened at a local theater in your area.

What Can be Learned in Participating?

The biggest thing this teaches is to work as a team and that communication is the key to creating and completing your project.  It also teaches that it helps to get everyone involved in all aspects of the process.  A small crew works bests, and it is a good idea to have some extras on standby.  I also learned that I can stay up for most of 48 hours and still be somewhat productive.  You will learn how well you work under pressure, and if you can even deal with pressure, because there will be plenty.  The intensity can be enormous.

The 48-Hour Film Project is a great way to build film-making skills.

Why Do I Feel it is Important to Enter?

It is important to enter, because the event gives participants the opportunity to work with new like-minded people and make long-lasting connections, which is very important in most industries but even more so in the entertainment world.

Below is where my team's film screened with nine other teams.  They were sold out! The only group to sell out.  The date has since passed and I apologize for those that missed it.  Look for us to do it again next year!!!
